 hello to all you ladies out there, oh yes i am still breastfeeding my 1yr old son. only at night times he wakes up 3-4 times for a feed. or should i say he just wants to be lached on, not all the time his drinking, its his comfort. help i want to stop.

 my son is 5 months old and i just stopped breastfeeding a couple weeks ago withou any problems. when he was only a couple weeks old i would have my husband give him a bottle of formula a night before bed while i pumped to keep up my supply. so he was used to both the bottle and having formula. i was sooo glad that i had done that.

 my son is 16 months old and i have breastfeed him since day one. but now i have to stop because he has tooth decay, even though i brushed his teeth 3 times a day. what i've been told is breastfeeding at night is bad. i thought i was doing what was best for my son but now im not so sure. just take good care of your babies teeth.

 to yaya fron luxenburg = your the one that's crazy and if u don't know wat your talking about don't talk at all breastmilk is the best thing in the world for babies and in some country's they feed until the kids are 5 yrs old!

 i have weaned my daughter now for 5 days. the only problem is the engorgement. i wear cabbage leaves all day&night in my bra. the pressure seems to build late night and through the morning. what i found that worked was to take a very warm bath and to stay in long enough for the breast milk to slowly drip out from both breasts. wish me luck i leave for 6days and hoping to be dried up by then. also ibuprofen helps with inflammation and pain. aloha!

 i was sooo haaapppy to read all your views because my baby is a serious marathon feeder at night. i dnt get enough sleep with all the feeding and i want to stop - she is 16 months old. her seniors i stopped by sending them away for a week; in her case there's nowhere to send her to. however, i've gotten some valuable tips from your comments and i'll keep you posted on how they work out. for you mothers who have made sacrifices to breastfeed your babies for at least 12 months, god bless you!

 my son has just turned one year. i hadn't really decided to stop breast feeding him, but he had a tummy bug and was sick with my milk, so i thought i would take the opportunity to stop feeding him cold turkey. he never liked drinking from a bottle so i thought it might be a problem. however, he very quickly became used to drinking from the bottle in one or two days. i was very engorged on one side, but found it helped to wear my most comfortable bra. i didn't want to pump at all, because i felt that would encourage my breast to make more milk. i found the hardest thing to deal with was his tears at nap and bedtimes. the best advice i can give is to change the bedtime routine. i found that if i stuck to the normal routine, he became more upset becuase he was expecting me to feed him. i change him for bed in the living room instead of his room. instead of sitting in our nursing chair with his bottle, we sit in the living room watching a dvd or reading a book which distracts him while he drinks his bottle. then i rock him to sleep when he is full, which is easier than trying to feed him when he is upset.

 i can't believe that you guys are brestfeeding your kids(yeah kids,not babes) for so long.... that is just sick to brestfeed children for 2-3 years..i just read few comments from the top and few from middle ,and i can't believe my eyes what i'm reding... anyway,i brestfeed my kids for few months and the best way to stop milk is to put every day (all day) for 4-5 days cold,cold neckerchief and tie it really good around brests(but every time it is dry you have to take it off and put some more water or ice on it) and it will dry in a minute ...i know it will hurt and it's not going to be easy but if you can if you continue like that for couple of days you should see difference... if you don't want to use that,just don't brestfeed or pump milk as often,and eventually it will stop.. don't drink too much juices and water..it will just make you plum:)) so good luck!!!! ps.i don't want to say that doctors are stuped but if you want to stop doing something ,i think that is your own decision...you know what is best for you and your child!!! and even if you take yor baby off ,and you stop brestfeeding don't feel bad,you still will be the best mother that you can be!!!!! that it... byeeee

 i brestfeed untill my son was 1 and a half. he got gastro so i had to stop giving him breest milk only water and jucie from a really expensive bottel. so i guess i went cold turkey. yes it takes long to get rid of the milk.

 i highly recomend if you have questions on weaning to go to the la leche league website or to find a leader in your area to have your questions answered. the apa recommeds breastfeeding for a minimum of a year and the who recommends at least two years. weaning is a slow gradual process that is best when it is child led. it begins when you introduce solids around the middle of the first year. each solid meal usually replaces one breastfeeding sesion. then at 8 to ten months they get introduce the sippy cup with water to get them used to drinking in a different way. my son had to use an adult cup i held at first before he got used to the sippy. my daughter weaned at 18 months with me doing very little than only feeding her when she asked. another thing i think help was that by 7 months with both my babies i had my husband lay them down to sleep a couple nights a week. instead of breastfeeding them to sleep all the time. this made it easier when my daughter weaned. because we already had other ways of lulling her to sleep. using any negative consequences to stop breastfeeding ( bad tastes on the breast) sounds like a bad idea to me. and probally a source of therapy bills when the children become adults. lol and even if you feel you don't want to be breastfeeding any more you will feel sad when the breastfeeding relationship ends.

 congratulations to all mothers that breastfed its hard especially the weaning process my son is 12 months and i have been trying for 7 months and there was rude comments on this site but they are the immature ones that cant that breastfeeding is a beautiful thing they need to grow up it is so healthy and good for you also but if anyone has advice on weaning during the night i would love it my son drinks plenty of sippy cups during the day night is my problem look forward to hearing the comments

 to anya from the united kingdom. i have a 29 month old that i am in the process of weaning. the thing that has made it a little easier for my daughter is the fact that we finally put her in a 'big girl bed'. you can pretty much forget weaning if the child is in the same bed as you. you have to start slowly, first move the child to a seperate bed (and room if possible) nurse the child to sleep and leave. if the baby wakes up, go to the baby and comfort, you may have to nurse the baby for a few nights for more during the night, but they seem to sleep better without the noise or movement of the parents in the bed. i have gone cold turkey with the weaning, i am very uncomfortable but i had to wean her because she had a stomach virus and my milk was giving her diahrea and vomiting. good luck, try not to make weaning a miserable experience for you and your child, replace the breastfeeding with lots of hugs, kisses and positive words. i also did this 9 years ago when i weaned my son......it really will work!

 i thought that my one year old son was too attached to the breast and would never want to wean. i slowly removed feedings one at a time so that my body could adjust the amount of milk it made and it wouldn't be painful. i found it easiest to take away afternoon feedings first. my son protested a bit at first, but i replaced the feeding with lots of cuddle time, love, kind words, a back rub, and stroking his hair to show him we can still be close and i am not rejecting him. it took several days but he handled it really well, much to my suprise and then took the initiative to drop his morning feeding and then a few days later he dropped his bedtime feeding. now i feel kind of sad because the weaning process only took 3 weeks or so and the last time he nursed i didn't know it was going to be the last time. my advice to all the moms out there trying to stop - please do not put something that tastes bad on your nipples to discourage your child from wanting the breast. to me, that seems like a betrayal of the trust. the method that i used worked really well for me, and i think it could work for alot of you. just substitute alot of love for for the missed feedings, so your child knows that giving up the breast doesn't equal giving up the closeness the two of you share.
